We have lived in this area our whole lives and know all the best places to eat, shop and stomp, both in Hay on Wye and slightly further afield. The house contains a comprehensive guidebook of these special spots, but here is a short list of our favourites and book-aheads
Canoeing
Wye Valley Canoe Centre sits on the banks of the River Wye, under three miles from the Lake House. Established over 40 years ago, they are the only canoe center in the area to have a base right on the river and have top notch equipment and staff. Booking on weekends essential!

Hiking
The protected countryside of the Brecon Beacons National Park is literally on the Lake House’s doorstep, making it a great base for walking enthusiasts. Be it strolling around the lake or hiking up Hay Bluff, the area has something for all levels.

Eating + Drinking
Our house guidebook contains a solid list of great local eating spots. Our favourite spots range from grabbing a takeaway pizza from Origin Pizza to eat by the lake, a treat dinner at Felin Fach or a sheeps milk ice cream at Shepherds Parlour. There is also a farmers market every Thursday in Hay-on-Wye.
Hay-on-Wye
Home of the world famous Hay Literature Festival, Hay-on-Wye is a special little market town on the border of England and Wales. Alongside its famed bookshops and year round events, there is a wealth of fabulous independent shops, cafes and galleries plus a brilliant deli and art house cinema.

Events + Festivals
Whether you want to immerse yourself in literature, laugh yourself silly, watch a local band or an international act, there's always something happening. Annual events in the area include the Royal Welsh Show, Hay Literature Festival, Green Man Festival, Abergavenny Food Festival and a number of fabulous local country shows - our favourites are Llanigon, Moccas and Llanthony (which hosts the UK’s last rodeo competition).
